Dairy Updates

Week 43, 2017

Please find the link below with world market prices covering dairy products as compiled by Danish Dairy Board this week. For your information, several spreadsheets are contained in the same file.

Over the last 2 week, Dutch prices of Butter has dropped by more than 20% in total and 9% this week alone. Furthermore, prices of both Cheese, WMP, and SMP are decreasing - this week they by 2 – 3%. The milk delivery in EU in August is expected to be approx. 3% higher than last year. Updated World Market prices are unchanged for WMP, but decreasing for both butter (-7.7%) and SMP (-1.3%). Last week the GDT-auction ended with a decrease of the GDT-index at 1%.

Speaking to various traders and producers it seems the current drop in price is more driven by lack of demand in key markets rather than an excessive amount of milk being available. Indeed milk prices remain high throughout EU, so expectations are that we could see a turnaround in prices if some major markets start to move again.

Week 38, 2017

European Butter once more firmed up marginally this week (+0.1%), whereas both Cheese and WMP prices weakened (Butter -0.7%, WMP -1.6%). SMP remained unchanged in price. GDT-auctions in New Zealand closed with the index increasing 0.9% due to increasing prices of Butter, WMF, and AMF – all other commodities weakened in price.

Estimates show that the July 2017 milk production in EU was up approx. 2% compared to July 2016.

Generally speaking, prices of fats are very firm and with the Christmas season in Europe approaching is expected to remain firm for a foreseeable future. Already larger supermarket-chains are worried about lack of Butter over the holiday season. Thus Cheese also remains fairly firm in price.
